UNEXPECTED BENEFITS OF WORKING OUT DURING A PANDEMIC
To work out or to not work out… that is the question.
After the statewide lockdown was announced in Oregon in early March, gym-goers were left with a few choices. To work out or to indulge while no one is looking. While the choice might not always be an easy one to make. Swapping out a Netflix binge for a work out class might have larger benefits than you would expect.
Even more than usual, we have a very good reason to exercise. Working out contributes to good health, a strong immune system, and improved mental well-being. Getting a good sweat on is especially beneficial now. As people spend more time at home, isolated from friends and family. Exercise is well known for its effect on mental energy and many of us could use a lift during these difficult times.
But how else can exercising during lockdown be beneficial? There are more unexpected benefits of working out during a pandemic - let’s dive into it.
KEEPING ROUTINES
Unstructured time can create boredom, increase stress, and lead us to unhealthy ways of dealing with that added stress. Studies in resiliency during traumatic events encourage keeping a routine or daily pattern. Waking up at the same time, having regular meals, and of course - exercising at regular intervals.
Sticking with a consistent workout routine can also lower cognitive strain. Better known as “decision fatigue”. By knowing when, where, and how you're going to work out each day, you open yourself up to use your mental energy for other aspects of life. And avoid the guilt that comes after a week of wine, the Tiger King, and Tik Tok dances.
Joining an online workout class or Livestream is one of the easiest ways to build a routine. If going to the gym was a staple in your life a few weeks ago, it still can be! Online classes and live-streamed workouts are just a click away.
STAYING POSITIVE
There’s no denying it, we live in a stressful and anxiety-provoking time. Exercise is one of the best and simplest ways you can combat that stress.
Exercise aids mental well being in two ways. It helps decrease stress hormones, like cortisol. And it also increases endorphins giving your mood a natural boost. Physical activity can also be a much-needed escape from negative thoughts and emotions. It can take your mind off of the problems we're all facing. And redirect it to the activity at hand. So when you find your mind lingering on the morning news, that's the best time to roll out a yoga mat, grab a resistance band, and get moving!
Not only will exercising help you cope with your current stress but it can also provide a buffer against future stress. Working out has been linked to lower reactivity toward stress. Meaning that moving on a regular basis will make you more resilient against stress and anxiety.
STAYING CONNECTED
One of the main weapons we have to fight COVID-19 is social distancing. Unfortunately, that is also a deeply unnatural practice for us. As humans, we thrive in groups and communities. We’re fundamentally social creatures, and during crises, our response is to come closer together - not six feet apart. It’s also worth noting that social connectivity is one of the greatest determinants of wellbeing there is.
Social distancing may even lower our immune system to some extent. Psychologists have found links between social isolation and illness — both mental and physical. Research has shown that being socially isolated can lower your immune system. While being more social can up your resistance to colds and flu!
So what can we do? How can we counter the negative effects of social distancing? You’ve read this far into the article so you might know the answer, working out.
In the world of apps, video conferencing, and streaming it’s easier than ever to stay connected. Your personal trainer, gym buddy, and fitfam community is just a click away.
Working out is a great way to stay connected. Or even join a new community in a world where physical interaction is limited.
Staying connected has compounding benefits. Moving with fellow gym goers, even virtually, can improve accountability and motivation. Because let’s be honest, it’s tough for anyone to do burpees by themselves. That’s part of the reason many of us join a gym or studio in the first place. Now that same connection and experience can be brought into your living room. Whether through a pre recorded workout or a live streamed class.
